I was looking for a lathe and I saw this Old craftsman lathe for $100 I was advised that it wasn't a very good lath, but then it dropped to $75 and now the guy wants to part it out. I wonder if I should offer him $50 as is or is it more trouble than its worth.

If it runs and seems smooth, sounds like a good deal. I would get it for that money.

Sounds like a good bet to me... although, it didn't look like it was all there to me.... I could not see the end opposite the motor-end... Is it missing? Sounds like you shoulda offered him $40

Yes I believe it’s all there and here is another photo from his ad: I know it’s not the best lathe, but I only plan to use it for making knobs and handles. I don’t have much room in my shop and I saw a YouTube video where a guy hinged it so that it could be lifted up out of the way. I think this lathe will be perfect for that because I don’t think it’s too heavy. Here is the video I referred to the lathe is at 7:35. I really like this guy because he thinks a lot like me. LOL

No Joe, I don’t know the guy who is selling it and never have met him. It is a sale from Craigslist and I will meet him later today to make the purchase. The video was just something I came across while looking for ideas to organize my small shop.

I think this lathe will be perfect for that because I don’t think it’s too heavy. You're getting it inexpensively enough to put some into it if it needs it. It will likely do just what you want it to do. It's probably not that heavy so you can store it out of the way.

Well I picked it up last night before taking the family out to dinner and didn't get a chance to look at it till this morning. It works but needs some work. The guy I bought it from wasn't really the mechanical sort and made some unorthodox repairs. One I can live with but the electrical repair I can't and need to fix that right away before using. He used it to make baseball bats for the kids.

Looks like he didn't like to plug the wire in... and just made it a Permanent connection... without a Grommet too... That could be very dangerous... It's also good to know that you can make Baseball bats on it!

I bought a new receptacle for $1.50 and just snapped it in. The receptacle already had the wires and I just needed to connect them to the switch. I also had to buy new centers because for some reason the guy ground the rear center. I haven’t actually done anything with the lathe yet because I need to replace the motor base. It’s a good base and I may have a use for it someday, but I need the regular 46 frame to mount it the way I want. I have a base already but just can’t find it although I maybe able to flip this base around if I can't find it. Oh and I still need to buy the cutting tools. I spent a couple of weeks working on my Pickup and only got it running right yesterday. I Spent a lot of money on unnecessary parts before finding the real culprit which only cost $50 LOL. Oh well Live and Learn!

Hey, Johnny,
You're making very good progress in getting it restored and ready to run!
The BIG Cutter tool expense to come... I understand that is the largest cost of having a lathe...
What will be your first project for it?
Thanks for the update.

Well Joe, I actually bought this for making new knobs for my plane collection. I got the itch to have a complete set of wood planes back in November and started buying used ones from eBay but they weren’t in very good shape. I’ve been cleaning them up and trying to restore them, but I was shocked when I priced replacement knobs.
I don’t know what else to make yet. I had a couple of ideas but I can’t think of them at the moment. LOL
Anyway I have some apricot and also apple wood from fruit trees I had to cut down in my back yard and I would like to make something out of them.
