Paring is a simple word which in my understanding means to shave or shear off. A dictionary may define it as...Something, such as a skin or peel, that has been pared off. Think of it as peeling a potato. When done to wood, its shearing off thin shavings to reduce the size or shaping to fit.
The word is thought of as being used as early as the 14th century. It's used commonly when referring to chisels and knives. I consider its use as done by hand versus done by machine. But I guess if a machine does that type of procedure you could call the process...paring.
As an example, when I pare, its usually to make a mortise and tenon fit better, or to clean out the bottom of a dado. Doing it successfully takes a guided hand, patience, and a very sharp edged tool.
