I have shared this with many but never publicly, but its time.
As many of you know there is a lot of ‘red blood’ that flows through my veins – Native American Indian and I’m proud of it, but this isn’t about me.
Native Americans were very spirited in their beliefs, and rightfully so. Many believed that the spirit of those who departed this world would return to those places and things that they had in the physical world. So if a warrior was headed out to do battle or even go on a hunt, they would place things in a ‘vessel’ and it would be kept so the spirit would again return to it. It was further believed that if any thing needed said to the departed one, it could be told to the vessel or written and placed within for those who had a written language.
I have made many vessels – typically our small keeping chest – for folks and it would be placed in a prominent place in the home, particularly in an area where the most time was spent, so all could be together again. It’s a physical association and remembrance of the individual.
The tragedy of 9-11 is not forgotten nor will it be, but many things were left unsaid. Not only from family and friends but from all of us, perhaps simply that those who lost their lives are not forgotten and that we still care and remember, whatever the message, they need to know.
We are building in a show a Tiger Maple Queen Anne blanket chest. When done we are going to take it to New York and with the help from New York Firefighter, John McDwyer, we are going to get it into a place of providence, this will be the vessel.
So, if you would like to say something to those who lost their lives on 9-11, write them a letter, no emails, write it, it needs to be from your hand, don’t type it either, write it. You can mail it to us at:
The Workshop of Charles Neil
Healing the Heart
118 W. Stonewall St.
New Market, VA 22844
When the chest is delivered (approx. 1st week of October) your letter will be in the chest and they will hear what you have to say.
I would like to do one for all our soldiers as well and will, we will keep you posted.
Never be timid to share this, as stated many times, I have, particularly when a life has been cut short unexpectedly, it give a chance to convey your heart and say what you never got the chance to, it will “Heal Your Heart.”
While the validity of this story could certainly come under hard scrutiny, and will, the hope and heart healing power of the gesture is amazing. I could tell you numerous stories about many folks and the impact the story has helped but emotion doesn’t allow. Just listen to your own heart and never forget the story and I hope you never need it, but if you do, well now ya know.
