A box for Manuals...
A few years ago, I made a box for our manuals... it's getting to be too small now.
Last week, a friend gave me a bunch of wood he didn't want... included, was a nice Maple board about 1/2x7x8' ... nice looking board... had a slight cup in it... I decided to use it to make the new manual box.
Cut it up to get the four pieces, sides & ends.
Used my router jig to flatten one side; same jig used in the Sliding Dovetail Wall Shelf.
Planed it down to about 3/8" with the DW735.
Sanded all four pieces.
Decided to use hand-cut dovetails again... laid them out, numbered all corners keeping the grain going in sequence to the original board...
Cut a few warm-up DT's to get in the mood...
Proceeded to cut the DT's over the next 2-3 days, taking my time (and not spending much time in the shop).
Finally finished them... not too bad... not perfect but passable...
Glued them up this time (First box went together without glue; and is still together ).
Sanded'em down and rounded the corners & top edges.
Cut a bottom from 3/4 ply & glued in place.
Cut a piece of 1/2" red oak ply for the top... laid out & marked for the strips, cut 1/2" strips of scrap maple, to hold the top on the box; just lays on top of the box. Used carpet tape to get strips positioned & fitted. Glued the strips to top underside. Hand planed (chamfered) top edges a little and sanded the top... ready for finishing.
Applied TransTint Golden Brown, from Book/Magazine case, sanded lightly, & applied about 6-7 coats of 2# cut blonde shellac.
Gave the box about 7-8 coats of 2# cut blonde shellac around the outside; 3 inside; 1 on bottom.
I have yet to put some felt on the bottom.
I think it's going to look pretty good & will definitely hold more manuals than before!
Pictures to come...
