I am currently working on 2 of these portable chairs. Page down for more updates and pictures.
Similar to the one Scott Phillips made on American Workshop, but slightly different. www.wbgu.org/americanwoodshop/images/plans/CrossBraceChair.pdfI haven't taken any pictures yet... Am getting all of the pieces (lots of slats!) made. When ready, I will take some pictures... I've been wanting to make a couple of these chairs for a long time... I'm using White Oak.

I did a little work on this today... Flush trimmed the side pieces... have a little sanding & round-overs to do. Chamfered the top edges of ALL slats & cross pieces... ... Have to sand a little, clean cut an end, setup a stop block, & cut Seat slats... ... then do the Back slats. Drill and band saw cut the screw plugs... 2 for each slat and 8 for special braces. Drill pilot & screw holes into all slats & braces... Layout the slat mountings for seats & backs... then Screw the stuff together! Plug the holes... and clean/sand... For such a simple looking project, there is a lot of busy work!

I have been putting just ONE chair together lately. A problem I have is the drill bit, that I'm using to predrill, keeps sliding into the drill making it Shorter! ... and I have to readjust after every hole! A real pain! I am using a hand drill; not a drill press. I DO get it as tight as I can. The bit a little smaller than 1/8"... going 3/4" - 1" deep. Do they make drills bits that have a Hex-end so it cannot slip in the drill? (NOT the kind where the bit is held with a hex jacket by an Allen screw... they are worse than ever!) I had to stop today because I ran out of battery power... have 2... but the other was dead also... So, I'm charging batteries right now... (I shoulda charged the other one when it went dead rather than waiting until the second also went dead... Oh well... Live & learn! ) Looks like they're going to go together very nicely from a practical, using/sitting standpoint. Will try to get pictures... for a little progress show...

Got a little more done today... got one chair "sitable" Had to make some minor changes... Seating area was too long... removed one slat & moved the 2" cleat up to where the slat was... (Turned out Perfect). The parts would not interlace for easy storing... did a little sanding making the sides of the Seat section a little narrower toward the bottom end... Fits good now. Now, on to get Chair #2 worked up to the same point. Then, a little sanding here n there (nothing major). Drilling screw hole plugs, slicing them on band saw, glue & insert to cover screws. (a whole BUNCH of em) & sand/chisel/plane smooth. Then on to the Finish... Haven't really decided... Was leaning to just BLO... (White Oak chairs)... any thoughts? Darn, I keep forgetting to take the camera out there!! I'm concentrating more on the real subject... The Project! Will try to get some next session.

Got into chair #2 today... rounded the hard edges of the side runners. I found out that I DO NOT have to predrill for the screws that I'm using! I knew that they were advertised as not needing predrilling... but I was chicken... until now... I tried it on scrap... Worked like a CHARM! They are SPAX screws from McFeeley's... you just have to be sure they're headed in the right direction. They actually have a drill head on them! I LIKE them! ;D Got all of the Seat section done today... I just may get the Back section done tomorrow...! Oh yes... I know... The Pictures... I must do that. Any other ideas on Finishing the white oak chairs... for semi outdoors and indoors? I'm leaning toward just plain ole BLO at this time.

OK, here are some pictures of them SO FAR... in process... Note: I added another cleat to the bottom of the Seat Section. The wood that I used was the "work" piece used while screwing the slats into place! ... they don't call us Yankees for nothing! ;D
... New cleat not added yet.
Now you know they exist! ... now, back out to the garage... ;D

I just calculated the number of screw Caps that wil be needed...
14 @ 2 = 28 3 @ 4 = 12 -------------- 1 Chair = 40
2 Chairs= 80 !!
That's a lot of caps to drill, cut, glue, pound, & trim!

Well, you're not going to believe this... (or maybe you will!) A few days ago, I was in the shop & I ran into a little plastic bag with about 4 plug cutters in it... I thought to myself, "Oh there they are... I will be needing these soon"... and went along with what I was doing. I knew exactly where they were... right? I go out to the shop, per the previous post, and go to where I thought I had seen them... they were NOT there... "Oh God, here we go again..." I thought... I looked around... over, under, everywhere... did NOT find them! BUT, I found something else that I couldn't find a few days ago! I knew I had four Rockler Bench Cookies somewhere... I tried to find them & COULD NOT find them... AND I bought 8 more of them! To day, in the process of looking for my Plug Cutters, I opened a drawer of a chest of drawers, saw some jars in there... saw a strange jar, picked it up, and found them to be MY BENCH COOKIES!! In fact, I think I ran across the plug cutters while I was looking for the bench cookies.... I NOW KNOW what to do! I'm going back out there and look for bench cookies I have already found! Maybe I'll find my plug cutters! ;D I am convinced that my brain is going South! ... leaving the rest of me here! Now you know how I spent most of the afternoon... More fun! I hate to buy some more plug cutters... I will end up with two sets eventually!! I'm going back out there to look some more...

Well, I broke down! I could not find my Plug Cutters... I received an email from Rockler... 25% OFF any regular priced item. I called them and asked if they had any 3/8" Plug Cutters on hand... they did. I told her that I couldn't print out the Coupon... she said, if you're in our database, we will honor it. I got in the car & went and BOUGHT ONE! It cost me $11.01 after discount, PLUS sales tax! This is the Plug Cutter that I gotOK, now, to cut 80 plugs (+ a few to be safe) and onward to finishing these chairs! edit: Now, when I find my LOST plug cutter set, I will kick myself, and let you know where I found them! ;D edit: I drilled 20 plugs... It's really hard on my drill press... Have to let it rest... Looking good! edit: I'm up to 51... time out for lunch & to let the drill press cool down... about 30 to go!
